Our project was a complete redesign of our backyard after removal of a pool, spa, and large deck. We wanted a space with low water needs and a natural habitat for birds, butterflies, and bees, but which also had ample space for gardening, wandering, and relaxing. As this was a fairly small, flat, rectangular area, it was a challenge to include all of these things in the design. We were impressed at Louise's ability to focus in on our priorities and to design and create a space which not only included all of them, but was beautiful besides! She incorporated our ideas about plants, hardscape, etc., and brought in many of her own which complemented and enhanced our vision. We now have a lovely outdoor space with meandering pathways, 3 patios, mostly native plantings, raised vegetable boxes, an herb garden, and even kiwi vines. It is a joy to look at and to spend time in, and fairly easy maintenance also. Our yard was chosen for the 2013 MMWD Marin-Friendly Garden Tour. I wrote a review a couple of years ago to praise Louise for her work on our Pasadena property. I'm updating today to say we hired her again to do both the front and back of our new home in Petaluma, and I couldn't be happier! We had a 6 foot retaining wall starting to give way, as well as a 4 foot wall running along a portion of our property boundary. The yard was starting to move a little when it rained so there was a lot of stress involved in the project. Louise came up with an amazing design to terrace the property with a series of smaller walls resulting in the back yard becoming entirely utilizable. The wall design had a complex array of curves and angles, some symmetry and some not symmetric, giving the whole yard a more rustic feeling, which was exactly what we were after. The budget was tight, but the project got held up by the city, so we were able to save more and get the whole project done. Louise was so patient with our continual scope creep as we progressed through the project and kept adding more to it as we saved. She came up with many great ideas for how to get the most for the available budget.
